Description:
The thermal properties of the regolith at the potential Landing Sites must be determined. Parameters of interest include:
- depth, density and structure of various layers
- variation with depth of:
- thermal conductivity
- specific heat capacity
- cohesion
- surface and subsurface temperatures
- diurnal variation of surface and subsurface temperatures
- distance to isothermal depth and hard rock
- solar absorptivity/emissivity
For the Apollo sites, these data should be available from NASA, based on soil samples taken by astronauts on the missions. For the Lunakhod sites, the data should be available from RKA (or secondary sources), based on soil samples returned robotically. --Anders Feder 13:26, 19 February 2009 (EST)
