Description:

Electronic circuits and systems aboard the lunar lander/rover will be seriously threatened by the radiation environment in low earth, lunar, and translunar space. These threats are basically two fold: degradation due to total ionizing dose (TID), and single event upsets from incident single very energetic particles. To survive such an environment, electronic components must be radiation "hardened".

Rad Hardened devices are usually classified as "military" or "commercial". The former components are designed principally to survive the rad field of nuclear detonations. The threat is mostly due to neutrons, x-rays, and gammas, and the hardening levels are in the gigarads, and the expense is very high.

Commercial components, used primarily in communication, resource and meteorological satellites, are hardened mostly against protons, alphas, and electrons encountered in the space environment, and they are usually hardened to from 100 to 500 kilorads. The hardening of these components utilize system concepts such as redundancy, voting systems, and layout to accomplish hardening. They are usually referred to as "Rad Tolerant" or "Radiation Hardened by Design", and are available from a number of manufacturers.

The goal of this task is to generate an Excel spreadsheet which would allow the user to match specific commercially hardened parts with manufacturers (and part availablity). Parts which must be hardened include both discrete (i.e., MOSFETS, BJTs) and integrated ciruits (both linear and digital). Be aware that other devices, such as CCD cameras, batteries, capacitors, etc., also have significand rad issues.
