Q. Does communcation include (radio-)navigation? Like Lunar Bus position determination, Rover bearing/distance...?

A. Short answer: Yes, but the exact scope to be decided.
The thing is that the scope of the communication system is a priori limited to end-to-end transport of telemetry and telecommands (TMTC) including video and file download. However, for the case of the Lunar Bus the TMTC signal can be used for tracking and ranging with relatively minor additions (echo delay=>range, doppler shift=>velocity). But this method only works for high velocities and ranges, thus not applicable for the rover. IMHO, if the rover will use radio navigation that can be done using the already existing TMTC link, then it will be part of the communication system. If the radio navigation will use an additional link which is independent of the TMTC link, then it will not be part of the communication system although the work can still be fully or partly supported by the group.

The portal needs to follow the guidelines. --Sean Casey 10:48, 11 August 2009 (EDT)

I've done a first attempt at standardizing the portal. The exact purpose and scope of Communications is to be determined/defined in order to avoid conflict with other groups. --Alexc 10:26, 24 August 2009 (EDT)

I still think mission data is better than payload data. If we use payload data for this purpose we will have to find another name for payload data inside a packet :P --Alexc 18:09, 24 August 2009 (EDT)

Yea, I know. The point is valid. But I still have some aversion to "mission data" has associating with an importance that I don't see as good for the systems perspective. But maybe I'm being too metaphysical about it. -- Jdp 18:18, 24 August 2009 (EDT)
