Leave a follow-up below if you have thoughts regarding the characterization of radiation environment on the Lunar surface.

A fault tolerant design is absolutely required for sending something to the Moon, but there are companies like Space Micro, Honeywell, and BAE Systems who can supply the radiation hardened processors and memory that will be required for this. I'd be willing to bet a more problematic aspect of winning the Google Lunar X-Prize will be navigating the soft Lunar soil that's going to build up on our Rover and do it's best to gum up the hardware. Is there such a thing as soil hardened hardware? Because I think that'll be a tougher problem than radiation hardened hardware. --Robert.vandyk 21:29, 14 July 2009 (EDT)
